How the Final Grade Is Calculated
This calculator combines your grade before the final exam with the grade earned on the final according to the exam's percentage weight. You can also use it to find the score you need on the final, calculate your overall course grade after the exam, or convert final-exam points into a percentage weight.
Final grade formulas
Required final exam grade = (Desired final grade − Current grade × (1 − Final exam weight ÷ 100)) ÷ (Final exam weight ÷ 100)
Overall course grade = Current grade × (1 − Final exam weight ÷ 100) + Final exam grade × (Final exam weight ÷ 100)
Final exam weight = (Final exam points ÷ Total course points) × 100
For example, if your current grade is 85%, your desired overall grade is 90%, and the final exam is worth 20% of the course, the required exam grade is 110%. If the maximum score is 100%, the desired overall grade cannot be reached without extra credit.

- Desired final grade: The overall course percentage you want after the final exam.
- Final exam weight: The percentage of the total course grade contributed by the final exam.
- Grade before final: Your current course grade before the exam, used when calculating the resulting overall grade.
- Final exam grade: The percentage score you received or expect to receive on the final.
- Total course points: The maximum number of points available in the complete course, including the final exam.
- Final exam points: The maximum number of course points assigned to the final exam.
- Minimum possible exam score: The lowest exam score allowed when interpreting whether the required grade has already been secured.
- Maximum possible exam score: The highest exam score available, normally 100% unless extra credit is offered.
- Decimal places: The number of digits displayed after the decimal point in the result.
Understanding the result
The result changes according to the selected calculation type. It may show the minimum exam grade you need, your expected overall course grade, or the percentage of the course represented by the final exam. A required score above the maximum possible score means the target grade is not reachable under the entered values. A required score below the minimum means you have already secured the desired overall grade.
